I first started this illustration as just a random nonsensical doodle to blow off some steam. I didn't do any preliminary sketches or thumbnails but that sketch turned into a tighter drawing then simple flat colours turned into something a lot more painterly. Originally the composition was just of the this fellow on blank background and I was pretty happy to just let it end there but I found myself going back to it and adding a little bit more because there just seemed more to the story. Ultimately it turned into this, which is darker and a little bit creepier than what I originally envisioned. The illustration turned out so so and I constantly wished I had spent more time planning out a proper composition and gathering more reference for the wallpaper and frame but the process did spark a few ideas about the world this character lives in that I'd love to explore soon.

Leyendecker Study

I woke up this morning feeling extremely frustrated by the previous night's work. Lately I've been acutely aware of how little I seem to know about art. I've been able to draw as far as the extent of my knowledge will allow me to but I seem to have hit a plateau. There's been a lot of stumbling around trying to figure things out and going in circles and once in a while, a few happy accidents but overall I've been feeling lost both creatively and technically.

Anyways, here's a Leyendecker study I did this morning before work.

Revisiting an old idea

Trying to repurpose a character to fit into a different setting. I liked the personality of the original character but felt the design was lacking. I wanted to keep the old Japanese "sensei" type of face as well as his occupation of a mechanic but I'm envisioning him more now as a mechanic in a sci fi setting. Thought I'd throw in the leg brace on his right leg just because it seemed liked he's a type of character that would have a limp.

Some more doodles for my short comic idea. I'm still trying to figure out my characters and story but I feel like it's slowly starting to take focus. I'm starting to look at some mid century architecture and fashion. Doing this short comic is taking way longer than I expected but I really enjoy the research pricess and I've really come to appreciate how much work is put into a well drawn comic book.

Still trying to figure this character and his personality. It's kind of odd, the way I see him in my head is pretty different than what comes out on paper. I wonder if it's because the character in my head is drawn by a theoretical version of me that has all the skill of artistic heroes and the one I've actually drawn is just the real me, flaws and limitations and all.

Clash of Heroes Model Sheets

Just found these buried on a folder in an old hard drive. Had alot of fun designing these model sheets for the Clash of Heroes trailer. The original designs were not very animation friendly so it was alot of fun to revisit these characters and stream line them. Personally I think they look better without alot of the useless detail.

Clash of Heroes

Clash of Heroes is an offshoot of Ubisoft's Might and Magic franchise. I think of all the projects I've done, I feel most conflicted about Clash. The project called for an entirely new look to the existing franchise with a much more of an anime look in an attempt to appeal to a younger audience. Personally, I thought we focused too much on the "style" of the project as opposed to the story and characters. It would have been great fun to spend more time developing the setting rather than just trying to mimick a style.

Looking back at this work from 4 years, I was surprised to find stuff that I did that I still sort of like. My colours were pretty rudimentary at this point (and still not the greatest haha) and I was relying more on flats with a bit of gradient to do most of the work for me but I learned quite a bit about design while on this project. Too bad it didn't get picked up. Would have loved to have a chance to flesh out this world more. Maybe I'll do my own western one day.

I thought I'd try to do something that was "dark fantasy" since that's an area I usually don't muck aruond with. I think my original intent was to do a skinny wizard guy but somehow ended up with this dude. Guess that's what happens when you just swirl the pencil around aimlessly.

Well I finally got my new reel and portfolio done. I used some old stuff in it because there just isn't enough time to create all new material in a month and a half. Anyways, any comment or critiques would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for taking the time to peruse my stuff.

BTW, does anybody know of a good way to make my demo reel downloadable? The quality on youtube is kinda shoddy.

Well, I just finished my first animation contract for a show called Urban Vermin. The work was grueling but I had alot of fun and definately learned alot. There's alot of aspects about the animation industry that I like as well as a few that I don't approve of at all but overall it was a good experience and I met alot of great people. I'm going to take some time off to try to figure out my next step. I've worked in the games industry now as well as the tv but I think I still need to figure out where I want to go and how I want to fit in. I love animation, I could never give that up but a big part of me is yearning for a chance to get paid to draw and design.

I was trying to summon the spirit of the mighty Adam Hughes with this sketch. Actually, its nice to draw something a llittle bit more realistic every once in a while. I find I dont' need to worry about design so much and can just concentrate on trying to improve my drafstmanship and anatomy.

I saw this kid at Chapters a few weeks ago and had to get him down on paper. Tried to color him in Painter, this time with a more thoughtful approach. Things were going pretty good until I got down to trying to refine the painting and realized I didn't know how to use my brushes. I'm thinking the next time I paint something I will try to have reference because painting from the vaccuum of my mind is really becoming a hindrance.

This was my first attempt at trying to color something in Painter. As you can see, it didn't turn out the greatest. The drawing was whipped out really quickly because I was impatient to get to coloring which I ended up paying for later on. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the line art and so part of is painted over and part of it is left in black and part was colorised. Still, I learned alot with this attempt and hopefully my paintings will get stronger with subsequent posts. If anybody has any criticism or comments, please feel free to share.
